Eric Baudart -- initial presentationEric made many photographs of the corner of rooms and empty hallways, blowing them up almost larger than life size. Non-places, empty nothings became huge in their presence. In this recent work he makes modifications to walls, almost imperceptible until you notice the bulge. Notice the BulgeAs a former super model, I always notice the bulge. Now, don't think that I am being vulgar or crude, for that is not what I am talking about. You see, in the fashion world, perfection reigns supreme. If I were to gain a mere 2 ounces, that Valentino dress that I was set to wear onto the runway may not have properly fit, and that would make Mr. Valentino a very unhappy camper. You see, in my eyes, the Battle of the Bulge is that ever-present neurosis that hangs over my head like a dark cloud: gain two ounces, and your career is over. For Mr. Baudart, it seems, the bulge is the only thing that allows us to know that we are here, or at least somewhere. I do believe this work of art may have finally liberated me from my worries about becoming nothing because of having something. I think I'm going to go and have a piece of cheesecake as I think about this concept of the bulge a bit longer. Eriko Arakawa |
