Marco and Miwa -- seeing silenceseeing silence this is a project we would like to propose to the MTA, a system of led lights which blink like fire-flies but only when there is no sound. At certain times at night, for a few moments there is silence in the Subway, and the twinkling will start-up. We will have a prototype of the system installed at an interesting location near Flux Hotaru-ga-IkeAh. This work drives directly into my soul. Many decades ago, I lived in a villa in the mountain resort town of Takarazuka in the Kansai Region of Japan. My lovely home was set beside a most elegant lake named Hotaru-ga-Ike, or Pond of the Fireflies. I spent many an evening sitting on my veranda, reading philosophy, drinking imported whiskey and pondering the virtues of life as the ever-present firefiles flashed on and off in the night before me. Silence, however, was not to be had. The sporadic chirping of a frog made the scene even more relaxing for me. Yet, I believe that in this work the clacking sounds of passing trains will erase the silent light that Miwa and Marco so desperately want to create. Modern times, it seems, quite rarely give us a chance to sit in silence, thinking about life and light. Eriko Arakawa |
