Nick Normal -- expansive Library BooksNick Normal creates facsimilies of books. He has agreed to mix some of these "fakes" in with the reference materials and other projects which will be presented in the references/background materials section of the show. roll it out..Don't stop at putting the fake books in an expected gallery/art space context--you need to put that shit on the shelves of New York city's public libraries! response to roll it out..while i haven't inserted my facsimiles onto the shelves at NYPL, or any other library/book depository, i have casually 'left behind' books in public spaces. re-inserting books into the NYPL facilities suggest working within a structure that i haven't come to terms with yet: i suspect that most shelvers or librarians would trash the work upon finding it, however by placing things in public places, on benches, seats on MTA subway trains, etc., there is a question to 'what do i do with this thing?' and someone is more inclined to inspect it, take it away, make it live. also, do not think that the 'expected gallery/art space' is an easy structure to penetrate: my facsimiles have been turned down more times in the 'expected' space than accepted, citing 'copyright violation' and other legal precedents. if you think the space is 'expected' then i find that sentiment unfortunate, because i really don't find it 'expected': most galleries do not promote the work or the context that Almost Something is engaging in. ciao wow.....BOOKSim confused, why are the books fake? |
But, what's inside?
I rather like the idea of fake books. But I want to know what will be inside of these fake covers? Will they be blank? Will they be pulp? Will they be actual books disguised as others? I think that you should make them interesting reading, Mr. Normal. Just think about fake nails. They are sharp and pointed. And colorful. And so should you be. An art rock star is about to explode. I can feel it in the air.
